Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before diving in Thailand!
Thailand can be divided into two areas when it comes to diving, the Gulf of Thailand on the east coast and the Andaman Sea on the west coast. Both areas are home to diving centers that are open all year round, as the weather in Thailand is warm enough during all seasons. The water temperature is lovely 26-30 °C.
In the Gulf of Thailand (here you will find Pattaya, Koh Chang and Koh Tao, among others), diving is possible all year round, but between November and March the conditions are best. From April to August, diving conditions are usually less predictable.
In the Andaman Sea (where Phuket, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are located), diving is best between January and April when you have the best visibility. From April to October, there is more movement in the water and visibility deteriorates.
No. Thailand is one of the best places in the world for beginners, with warm water, good visibility, and plenty of beginner-friendly dive sites. Most travelers start with a PADI Open Water course and get certified in just a few days.
Koh Tao and Phi Phi are among the most popular destinations for new divers. More experienced divers often head to the Similan Islands, Koh Lanta, or Richelieu Rock for spectacular marine life and advanced dive sites.
Most Open Water courses take 3 to 4 days to complete. After certification, you'll be able to dive independently with a buddy anywhere in the world.
Thailand is one of the most affordable places in the world to learn scuba diving. Prices vary between dive schools and locations, but certification courses are generally much cheaper than in Europe, Australia, or North America.
