Ecuador is a year-round destination, but the best time to travel depends on which region you plan to visit. Thanks to its diverse geography, the country has several different climate zones.
The Highlands (Quito & the Andes)
Temperatures are generally mild throughout the year, with daytime temperatures averaging around 15–20°C. The rainy season runs from October to May, although rain often comes in short afternoon showers.
The Coast (Guayaquil & Manabí)
The Pacific coast enjoys a tropical climate year-round. The dry season runs from June to November, while December to May is warmer, more humid and sees more rainfall.
The Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon is warm and humid throughout the year. Rain is possible at any time, although the wettest period is typically between April and June.
The Galápagos Islands
From December to May, you'll find warm temperatures, sunny weather and calmer seas, making it ideal for snorkelling and wildlife cruises. June to November is cooler and windier, with stronger currents and excellent diving conditions.
Because Ecuador's regions all have different climates, there's always somewhere with great conditions to explore, no matter when you travel.
No, you don't need to speak Spanish to travel in Ecuador. In popular tourist areas, hotels and tour operators, you'll often find people who speak some English. However, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases can make travelling much easier and help you connect with locals, especially in smaller towns, local markets and more remote regions.

We recommend at least 10–14 days to experience Ecuador's highlights. If you'd like to combine the Andes, Amazon rainforest, Pacific coast and the Galápagos Islands, two to three weeks will give you a much more relaxed itinerary.

Because Ecuador has several climate zones, it's best to pack for different conditions. Lightweight clothing works well for the coast and Amazon, while a warm layer and rain jacket are useful for the Andes and higher elevations. Comfortable walking shoes are essential if you plan to hike.
