Must-See Iceland: From Glaciers to the Blue Lagoon
Nestled at the southern edge of the massive Vatnajökull glacier lies Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon that feels pure magic. What makes it truly unique is its location—just a stone's throw from the ocean. Simply cross the road, and you'll find yourself on a breathtaking black-sand beach. This is the famous Diamond Beach, where sparkling ice crystals wash ashore, glistening like diamonds against the dark volcanic sand.
Together with Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss and Geysir make up Iceland’s famous "Golden Circle."
Gullfoss Waterfall: One of Europe’s most stunning waterfalls. Standing near this double-cascade waterfall—dropping a dramatic 105 meters—allows you to feel the sheer, roaring power of nature. On a sunny day, the mist creates dozens of vibrant rainbows across the water curtain.
Geysir Geothermal Area: Visible in the distance from the waterfalls is a vast, steaming landscape. The eruptions here are world-famous, with hot springs shooting boiling water up to incredible heights of 80 meters!

Iceland is one of the priciest destinations in Europe, with daily costs averaging €100 to €320 per person. Restaurant meals are notoriously expensive, often costing €30–€60 per dish. You can save substantially by buying groceries at discount supermarkets like Bónus or Krónan, where a week's worth of food costs about €75–€150.
How to save money:
Travel in the Off-Season: prices drop by 30-50% during winter (November-March). The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) also offer a good balance of weather and value.
Stock up at Duty Free: Alcohol is heavily taxed in Iceland. Most travelers stock up on beer and wine at the duty-free shop at Keflavík Airport before entering the country.
Drink the tap water: Tap water in Iceland is incredibly pure, delicious, and free. Bring a reusable water bottle and never pay for bottled water.
Eat at local spots: For cheaper dining options, look for local gas stations. They are famous for serving surprisingly good, affordable hot dogs and quick meals.
Iceland has a cold maritime climate. During the Dutch summer months, it is also "summer" in Iceland, offering mild and pleasant temperatures. The highland roads are open, allowing you to explore parts of the country that are impassable the rest of the year. Additionally, it only gets dark for a few hours each night due to the "Midnight Sun."
In the winter months, it can get very cold, and the landscapes are mostly covered in snow. This is a great time to travel to Iceland if you have already experienced the country in the summer. Keep in mind, however, that there are only a few hours of daylight per day. Furthermore, some accommodations may be closed or activities cancelled. For instance, while highland roads are inaccessible in winter, it is an excellent time to ride a snowmobile or 4WD through the snowy landscape and sit cozily by the fireplace in the evening.
The best way to travel around Iceland is by 4WD. Alternatively, you can take the bus that runs through various parts of the country, or join a group tour. The advantage of a group tour is that it allows you to see a relatively large part of the country in a short amount of time, you can relax during the journey (no need to drive or figure things out yourself), and you get to meet like-minded travelers from all over the world.
