Getting Around Tokyo & Beyond
Japan’s transport system is next-level.
We’re definitely not talking bumpy, delayed buses with broken AC here. In Japan, you’ll be traveling with the world-famous high-speed "Shinkansen" bullet trains—the fastest in the world, which is a whole experience in itself. They are ALWAYS on time, despite the massive number of daily commuters.
Japan Rail Pass A train pass, specifically the Japan Rail Pass, is a super convenient and budget-friendly way to explore Japan. It lets you hop on and off the high-speed bullet trains whenever you want. Delays are practically unheard of in Japan. So, just jump on a train in Tokyo, and vips—you're in your next destination, whether that’s Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, or Hiroshima!

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, keep in mind that the climate varies a lot depending on when and where you go. Japan has four distinct seasons, each with its own vibe and epic experiences to offer!
Spring (March – May) Spring is one of the most popular times to hit up Japan, thanks to the iconic cherry blossoms. Plus, the weather is super mild and comfortable!
Summer (June – August) Summer gets hot and humid, but it’s also prime time for massive festivals (matsuri) and breathtaking fireworks shows (hanabi).
Autumn (September – November) Autumn is another favorite for travelers, bringing cooler temperatures and stunning fall foliage.
Winter (December – February) Winter in Japan can get pretty chilly, but it’s the perfect time for hitting the ski slopes, soaking in hot springs (onsen), and checking out winter festivals.
Generally, we recommend 5 to 7 days to get the full Tokyo experience. But hey, it’s your trip and your budget—so what do you really want to see and do? Here are a few things to consider when figuring out your itinerary:
The Hotspots Tokyo is absolutely packed with things to see and do. If you want to hit up all the main spots like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, and Akihabara, you’ll want to set aside at least 4–5 days. This gives you plenty of time for temple hopping, shopping, and diving into Japan's insane food scene.
Day Trips You can easily take day trips to nearby places like Nikko, Kamakura, or Hakone. If you want to add these to your list, we recommend adding another 2–3 days to your plan. It’s a great way to experience a different side of Japan beyond Tokyo.
Your Interests Tailor the trip to your own vibes. Are you all about art and culture, food, shopping, or tech? Adding a few extra days to try out different restaurants, join local workshops, or visit museums will turn this into your ultimate dream trip.
Exploring & Vibe-Checking If you have the time, it’s totally worth staying a few extra days just to wander around and soak up the atmosphere. Checking out parks, quirky cafes, and local markets gives you a much more authentic taste of the city. If you want a more laid-back vacation, 7–10 days is a solid benchmark.
Getting Around Tokyo is massive, and even though the transport system is incredible, getting from A to B takes time. Make sure to factor in some travel time between different neighborhoods and sights so you don't have to rush.
1. Explore different neighborhoods Tokyo is a patchwork of unique areas with totally different vibes. From the futuristic energy of Shibuya and Shinjuku to the traditional charm of Asakusa and Ueno, make sure to explore multiple districts to get the full Tokyo experience.
2. Take a day trip There are so many epic day trips just a short train ride away. Check out the historic streets of Kamakura, soak in the views at the Fuji Five Lakes, or hit up world-class theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland.
3. Learn a few local phrases While plenty of people in Tokyo speak English, throwing out a few basic Japanese phrases is always appreciated. It shows respect and can make your interactions way smoother.
4. Dodge the rush hour Tokyo’s transit system is next-level intense. To avoid getting packed like a sardine, try to stay off the trains during peak hours—usually between 7–9 AM and 5–7 PM.
5. Go on a food safari Tokyo's food scene is legendary. Try everything from conveyor-belt sushi and steaming bowls of ramen to random street food stalls. Also, visiting an Izakaya (a traditional Japanese pub) is an absolute must for a night out!
6. Pack for the season Tokyo is stunning year-round, but the weather swings big time depending on when you go. Make sure to check the forecast and pack smart!
7. Download the right apps Save yourself the headache and download Google Maps or the Japan Travel app for navigating the train lines, plus a solid translation app.
8. Respect the local culture Japan has some unique cultural etiquette and unwritten rules. Do a quick read-up before you go (or hit us up for tips!) to make sure you're being a respectful traveler.
