Petra, which in Greek means "gorge in the hill", is a historic city in Jordan and is known for its rock-cut architecture. The city is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. If you travel to Jordan, Petra is an absolute must-see and is therefore one of the country's main attractions.
The Nabataeans built Petra as their capital around 100 BC. The city remained unknown to the Western world until 1812. The Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt introduced the city to the West. Petra was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time itself."
Since 1985, Petra has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as "one of the most precious cultural properties of humanity's cultural heritage."

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant temperatures for sightseeing and hiking. Jordan can be visited year-round, but summers can be very hot, especially in the desert.
Get up early so you can enter the site as soon as the gates open at 6:30 a.m. The impressive walk through the Siq and the stunning Treasury are best experienced with as few people around as possible. The shuttle buses and tour groups start arriving around 9 or 10 a.m., and by then the site becomes extremely crowded. It is also cooler in the morning, making the walk much more comfortable.
Yes. Jordan is widely considered one of the most welcoming and accessible countries in the Middle East for solo female travellers. Locals are generally friendly, helpful, and used to welcoming visitors from all over the world.
That said, Jordan is still a relatively conservative country, so dressing modestly and respecting local customs can help you feel more comfortable, especially outside the main tourist areas. You may occasionally attract some attention or curiosity, but this is usually harmless and comes from genuine interest rather than bad intentions.
If you're looking for the freedom of independent travel while also enjoying the security and social side of travelling with others, a group trip can be a great option.
