Mexico City
Start in Mexico City, where grand plazas, leafy neighbourhoods, fascinating museums and incredible food markets make it one of Latin America's most exciting capitals. Yucatán Peninsula
Yucatán Peninsula is where you'll find white-sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean waters and some of Mexico's most famous Maya sites. Visit Chichén Itzá, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, before the crowds arrive, then cool off with a swim in one of the region's spectacular cenotes – natural limestone sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. If you're a diver, we also highly recommend exploring the cenotes underwater. It's a truly unique experience, where you can discover fascinating rock formations, crystal-clear underwater caves and, among other things, witness a halocline – the point where freshwater and salt water meet, creating a surreal, shimmering, glass-like optical illusion.
If you love life by the sea, explore the coastline beyond the bigger resort towns. Go snorkelling or diving along the Mesoamerican Reef, one of the largest coral reef systems on the planet, or hop between islands like Isla Holbox, where sandy streets, relaxed cafés and spectacular sunsets create a much slower pace of life. The island is filled with colourful houses and an impressive amount of beautiful murals and street art.
Puerto Escondido
On the Pacific coast, Puerto Escondido has become a favourite for surfers, but you don't need to surf to enjoy it. Golden beaches, fresh seafood and a laid-back atmosphere make it an ideal stop, whether you're catching waves or simply watching them roll in.
San Cristóbal de las Casas
Looking for somewhere a little different? Head into the highlands around San Cristóbal de las Casas. Surrounded by mountains and rich in indigenous culture, it's a great place to slow down, wander colourful streets and experience a different side of Mexico that many visitors never see.
If you're craving adventure, Mexico delivers. Trek through dramatic mountain landscapes, hike volcanic trails, kayak along the coast or explore underground cave systems hidden beneath the jungle. With landscapes ranging from deserts and canyons to tropical forests and coral reefs, there's no shortage of ways to get outdoors.

When is the best time to visit Mexico?
Mexico is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you're heading.
The dry season, generally from November to April, is the most popular time to travel. Expect warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine and excellent conditions for exploring cities, beaches and archaeological sites.
If you're planning to visit the Caribbean coast, keep in mind that the hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk usually between August and October. Rain showers are often short, however, and travelling during the shoulder seasons can mean fewer crowds and lower prices.
The Pacific coast is ideal for surfing throughout much of the year, while the cooler months are generally best for hiking and exploring Mexico's mountains and colonial towns. Whatever time you visit, you'll find festivals, incredible food and plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track.

Most travellers have a safe and enjoyable trip to Mexico, but it does pay to use common sense, especially in bigger cities. Stick to well-known areas, avoid walking around alone at night, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and check the latest local advice before you travel. Like anywhere else, a bit of awareness goes a long way.
Two to three weeks gives you enough time to combine a few regions, but you could easily spend a month or more exploring everything the country has to offer.
Long-distance buses are comfortable, affordable and connect most destinations. Domestic flights are useful if you're covering larger distances.
