Queenstown
The adventure hub of the South Island, surrounded by mountains and Lake Wakatipu. It’s the place for activities like hiking, bungee jumping, skydiving and jet boating, but also great for relaxing by the water or exploring nearby wineries.
Milford Sound
One of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes. A deep fjord framed by steep cliffs, waterfalls and misty peaks. Whether you visit by boat or drive through Fiordland National Park, it’s a highlight you won’t forget.
Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park
Home to the country’s highest mountain and incredible alpine scenery. Think glaciers, hiking trails and some of the clearest night skies for stargazing.
Wanaka
A laid-back lakeside town with mountain views, outdoor activities and one of the most photographed trees in the world. A great alternative to Queenstown if you want a slower pace.

Best time to travel to New Zealand’s South Island
The South Island can be visited year-round, but the best time really depends on what you want to experience. December to March (summer) is the most popular period, with warm temperatures, long daylight hours and ideal conditions for hiking, road trips and exploring lakes, coastlines and national parks. This is when most trails are open and the landscapes are at their most accessible.
June to September (winter) is the time for snow, ski seasons and dramatic alpine scenery, especially around Queenstown and Aoraki / Mount Cook. It’s a completely different experience, with fewer travellers and a more rugged atmosphere in the mountains. The shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) are also great if you want fewer crowds and still good weather, especially for photography and hiking without peak-season traffic.
