When is the best time to go surfing in Australia?
You can surf along the east coast all year round, but September to April is a particularly good time for beginners, with warmer water and generally more manageable waves. Surf lessons usually take place early in the morning, when conditions are at their best.
If you plan to visit Australia at other times of the year, you can still surf, but conditions may be more challenging and the water will be cooler, so you'll need to wear a wetsuit. During these months, it's particularly important to surf with an instructor who can guide you, help you stay safe and make sure you make the most of your time in the water.

Frequently asked questions
There is no single best place to surf in Australia, and you can find great waves along both the East, South and West Coasts. The East Coast is the most popular region, with famous surf spots like Bondi Beach and Byron Bay. This is also where you'll find Spot X Surf Camp, one of our most popular surf camps in Australia.
No, Australia is suitable for both experienced surfers and beginners. There are plenty of opportunities to join a surf camp, where you can learn the basics or take your skills to the next level. Of course. At KILROY, we're experts in tailor-made trips, and your adventure is designed around your wishes, budget and schedule. So yes, we can definitely help you combine surfing with loads of other experiences in Australia.
For example, you could combine surfing with an epic road trip along the coast, or swap the waves for the underwater world and add some diving to your adventure. You could also mix laid-back surf life with big-city experiences, hiking, wildlife encounters and plenty more.
Whatever you're dreaming of, we'll help you put together an Australian adventure that suits you.
Technically, yes, but we wouldn't recommend it. Even if you've surfed elsewhere before, it's a good idea to go out with an instructor for at least your first (few) sessions in Australia. Australian beaches can be unpredictable, with strong currents and rips that aren't always easy to spot, so having someone who knows the local conditions can make a big difference.
If you're a beginner, it's not just about safety, it's also about actually having fun. Surfing might look easy when someone else is doing it, but it takes a bit of practice. Learning the basics and getting some guidance before heading out will give you a much better chance of actually catching a wave and getting up on the board.
Because we're experts in tailor-made adventures. We work with some amazing partners offering surfing experiences across Australia, and whether you're dreaming of a longer stay at a surf camp or just a one-day surfing experience, we can help make it happen.
Let us know what you're dreaming of, and we'll help you create the trip of a lifetime.
