Uganda is one of Africa's most diverse destinations and is known as the "Pearl of Africa." A tour of the country reveals a landscape that alternates between vast savannas, tropical rainforests, volcanic terrain, and immense lakes. The country is particularly renowned for the impressive gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you can come face-to-face with the rare mountain gorilla. The best time to travel to Uganda

Uganda is warm year-round and features various tropical climates. Thanks to the country's high altitude, temperatures are milder than in lower-lying neighboring countries. The two dry seasons are the best times to visit. During the short dry season (December through February), the landscape is dry—a result of the preceding rainy season bringing little precipitation and the long dry spell that came before it—making wildlife easy to spot. During the long dry season (June through September), the landscape is wetter due to heavy rainfall in the preceding months; while the rainforests may feel cooler and wildlife harder to track, the scenery is beautifully lush and vibrant. If you don't mind the occasional shower and love green landscapes, the rainy seasons are also excellent times to visit—and they are much less crowded!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

All the things you want to know about Uganda, from the wildlife to safety and planning tips.

Uganda is best known for its mountain gorillas, which can be visited during a gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The country is also famous for traditional safaris, tree-climbing lions, chimpanzee trekking, the source of the Nile, and its rich cultural diversity.

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September. These months typically offer the best conditions for wildlife viewing, gorilla trekking, and outdoor activities, although Uganda can be visited throughout the year.

Yes. Uganda is one of only a few countries where you can see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. Gorilla trekking takes place primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences.

Absolutely. Uganda combines classic safari experiences with unique primate encounters. Visitors can spot elephants, buffalo, hippos, lions, leopards, giraffes, and hundreds of bird species across the country's national parks, making it one of East Africa’s most diverse safari destinations.

Uganda is a popular destination for international travellers, and thousands of visitors explore the country every year. We work exclusively with carefully selected local operators, experienced guides, and trusted accommodation partners to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. As with travel to any destination, we recommend following local advice, exercising normal precautions, and checking official government travel guidance before departure.

Vaccination and health requirements can vary depending on your nationality, travel history, and personal circumstances. We recommend speaking with your GP, travel health clinic, or vaccination centre well before your departure to receive the latest advice and ensure you are fully prepared for your trip. Yellow fever vaccination requirements may apply for some travellers, and professional medical advice should always be sought before travelling.

We recommend spending at least 10–14 days in Uganda to fully experience the country's highlights. This allows enough time for gorilla trekking, safari game drives, chimpanzee encounters, cultural experiences, and visits to iconic destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Nile region around Jinja. It's also very nice (and common) to combine travelling to Uganda with a visit to Kenya, Tanzania and possibly Zanzibar.

Uganda has laws and social attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community that are significantly more conservative than those found in many Western countries. LGBTQ+ travellers should familiarise themselves with local laws, customs, and official travel advice before visiting and carefully consider how they wish to travel within the country.

Many travellers still visit Uganda successfully each year, particularly as part of organised tours and safari experiences. At KILROY, we work with carefully selected local partners who are committed to providing professional and respectful service to all travellers. We believe everyone deserves to feel welcome while travelling and encourage customers to make informed decisions based on the latest information available before departure.
