SURFING IN ASIA: WHERE TO CATCH THE BEST WAVES

Learn to how to surf in Asia

Places to Surf in Asia for Beginners, Intermediates and Pros

Asia is packed with world-class surf spots, whether you’re chasing your first foamie or paddling out to reef breaks. From mellow beach breaks in Southeast Asia to punchy reef waves on island coasts, surfing in Asia is more than just a hobby — it’s a lifestyle. The region is home to some of the best places to surf in Asia, with consistent swell, warm waters, and epic travel vibes to match. If you're looking to combine surfing Southeast Asia with culture, food, and easy backpacking, these spots should be on your radar.

Ahangama & Weligama, Sri Lanka

Best for: Beginners to intermediates

These laid-back surf towns on Sri Lanka’s south coast are an absolute dream if you're just getting started or want to level up your skills. Weligama’s bay offers a long, slow wave that’s perfect for learners, while nearby Ahangama brings more variety — from mellow reef breaks to punchier waves. Surf schools are everywhere, the water is warm, and there's a solid crowd of travellers to hang with post-surf. Plus, you can mix in yoga, coconuts, and curry between sessions.

Canggu, Bali, Indonesia

Best for: All levels

Canggu has become the surf mecca for digital nomads, beginners, and seasoned surfers alike. It's super accessible (just a short drive from the airport), and you’ll find beach breaks like Batu Bolong for beginners, plus faster waves like Echo Beach and Berawa for more advanced riders. Off the board, there's no shortage of cool cafés, board rentals, parties, and chilled-out vibes. It’s busy, but there’s a reason Canggu is one of the best places to surf in Asia.

Siargao, Philippines

Best for: Intermediate to advanced

Siargao is known for Cloud 9, one of the most famous reef breaks in the world. This wave packs a punch and isn’t for the faint-hearted, but don’t worry — there are plenty of more mellow spots around the island. The scene here is super friendly, the scenery is unreal, and it’s a solid stop if you’re planning to go surfing Southeast Asia style, hopping islands and living the salty life.

Sumbawa, Indonesia

Best for: Advanced surfers

If Bali feels too crowded, head east to Sumbawa. Spots like Lakey Peak and Scar Reef are legendary among more experienced surfers. The waves here are heavier and less forgiving, but the crowds are smaller, and the adventure level is high. It’s raw, remote, and absolutely worth it if you’ve got the skills and want to push yourself on some seriously good waves.

Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

Best for: Intermediate surfers

Located on Sri Lanka’s east coast, Arugam Bay has a completely different vibe from the south coast. It’s a seasonal surf spot (best from May to September), and the main point break here offers long, peeling rights perfect for intermediates. It's also got that classic backpacker energy - with plenty of budget accommodation, surf camps, beach bonfires, and smoothie bowls.

Da Nang & My Khe Beach, Vietnam

Best for: Beginners

Vietnam might not be the first place you think of when it comes to surfing in Asia, but Da Nang’s My Khe Beach is surprisingly decent. It’s got soft waves ideal for learning, especially between September and March. Surf culture here is still small, but growing - which means fewer crowds and a chance to score a surf-and-noodle combo far off the usual tourist trail.
