What to explore in Colombia?

Colombia is packed with experiences, whether you're drawn to vibrant cities, untamed nature or places that feel far from the crowds.

Experience Colombia's vibrant cities

Start in Bogotá, the country's high-altitude capital. Framed by the Andes, the city blends colonial architecture with modern neighbourhoods, while street art, live music and lively markets give it a creative energy. Continue to Medellín, where a remarkable transformation has made it one of South America's most exciting cities. Explore its colourful districts, learn about its fascinating history and enjoy a cup of locally grown Colombian coffee.

No trip is complete without visiting Cartagena, where pastel-coloured colonial buildings, cobbled streets and Caribbean charm create one of the country's most memorable city breaks. If music and dance is your thing, make time for Cali, Colombia's salsa capital, where dancing is woven into everyday life and there's always a party to join.

Head into the wild

Colombia's landscapes are just as diverse as its cities. In Tayrona National Park, rainforest-covered hills give way to secluded Caribbean beaches, with hiking trails leading to hidden coves and spectacular coastal views. Offshore, the Rosario Islands offer crystal-clear waters that are ideal for snorkelling. If you want to explore further beneath the surface, head to Taganga where there's great diving opportunities.

Further inland, the Cocora Valley near Salento is home to the world's tallest wax palms, where hiking trails wind through misty cloud forests and rolling green hills. On Colombia's remote Pacific coast, dense rainforest stretches all the way to black-sand beaches, creating one of the country's wildest landscapes. Between June and October, it's also one of the best places to spot migrating humpback whales.

Slow down and explore

Some of Colombia's most memorable places are the ones that invite you to linger. Wander through the colourful streets of Guatapé, soak up the laid-back atmosphere of Minca, surrounded by lush mountain scenery, and take the time to connect with the welcoming locals who make travelling in Colombia feel so rewarding.

Lost City Trek: Colombia's ultimate jungle adventure

If you're looking for an adventure that goes far beyond the usual tourist trail, the Lost City Trek - Ciudad Perdida - delivers. Although the ancient city has been open to visitors for more than a decade, it remains one of Colombia's best-kept secrets. This challenging multi-day hike takes you deep into the Sierra Nevada mountains, where dense rainforest hides one of Colombia's most remarkable archaeological sites. Along the way, you'll cross rivers, tackle muddy jungle trails, climb steep mountain paths and pass through Indigenous communities that still call this region home. Reaching the ancient stone terraces of Ciudad Perdida is a reward in itself, but it's the journey that makes this trek unforgettable. With knowledgeable local guides bringing the history of the Tairona civilisation to life, it's one of Colombia's most immersive experiences for travellers who don't mind earning the view.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

Colombia is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you're travelling and what experiences you're seeking. If you'd like to avoid the wettest months in many parts of the country, December to March, as well as July and August, generally offer drier conditions. The Caribbean coast enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year, making it a great option in almost any season. Because Colombia's landscapes range from tropical coastline to high mountains, the weather can vary significantly between regions, so it's always worth planning according to your itinerary. When you book your trip with KILROY, we'll of course help you choose the best time to travel, so you can make the most of your adventure.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Colombia isn't a risk-free destination, but most international travellers have a safe trip. Stick to well-known areas, avoid walking alone after dark and use official taxis or trusted rideshare apps. Petty crime, including pickpocketing and robberies, can occur, particularly in larger cities, so keep valuables out of sight and hold on to your phone when using it in public. A phone lanyard or crossbody strap can also make it more difficult for thieves to snatch it. Never accept drinks, food or cigarettes from strangers, and be cautious if you're using dating apps, as they are sometimes used to target travellers. If you stay aware of your surroundings, follow local advice and take sensible precautions, you're likely to have a safe and enjoyable trip. As always, check your government's latest travel advice before you travel.

We recommend spending at least a couple of weeks in Colombia - and you can easily stay longer as well, especially if you plan to do the Lost City trek or other multi-day activities.

Long-distance buses connect most of the country, including many smaller towns. Domestic flights are a good option if you're travelling longer distances and want to save time.

Absolutely. Colombia offers jungle trekking, hiking, whale watching, snorkelling, diving and countless opportunities to explore remote landscapes.

Colombia can be visited throughout the year. December to March, plus July and August, are generally among the driest months in many regions.

Popular highlights include Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Tayrona National Park, Ciudad Perdida, Cocora Valley, Guatapé, Minca and Cali.
