El Salvador's main international airport is located near San Salvador, making it an easy starting point for exploring the country. Taxis and colectivos (shared minibuses) are convenient and affordable ways to travel between towns and attractions.
For longer journeys, reliable bus services connect major destinations, while the country's colorful former American school buses offer a budget-friendly and authentic local travel experience. Although these buses are inexpensive and widely used, they can be quite crowded and are not always the most comfortable option, especially for taller travelers or longer journeys.
If you prefer more flexibility, car rental is widely available in San Salvador. Travelers planning to continue to neighboring countries should check border opening hours and entry requirements in advance.

Best time to travel to El Salvador
El Salvador enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, when sunny days and pleasant temperatures create ideal conditions for hiking, surfing, diving, and exploring the country's natural attractions.
The rainy season typically runs from May to October, bringing frequent afternoon showers and occasional heavy rainfall. Due to its location on the Pacific coast, El Salvador can also experience tropical storms, particularly between June and December. While the landscapes are at their greenest during this period, travelers should be prepared for wetter conditions and possible weather disruptions.
