Here’s everything you need to know before heading into the wild
The best time for safari is during the dry season (May to October). Vegetation is thinner, water sources are limited, and wildlife gathers around rivers and waterholes, making animals easier to spot. The summer months (November to April) are greener and great for birdwatching, but sightings can be a bit more challenging.
South Africa is famous for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. You can also spot giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, antelope species and many different birds. Every safari is different, so no two game drives are ever the same. However, it’s important to remember that these are wild animals in their natural habitat, so sightings are never guaranteed and each experience is unique depending on luck, timing and conditions in the bush.
A typical safari lasts 2 to 5 days, but longer trips give you a better chance of seeing more wildlife and different ecosystems. Many travellers combine safari with other highlights like Cape Town or the Garden Route.
