Zero chance! Honestly, most people on these trips are solo backpackers looking for the exact same thing: instant travel buddies to hike volcanoes, hit up lake bars, and share tacos with. You get built-in friends for the wild stuff, but total freedom to do your own thing when you just want to chill. You’ll be paired up with a roommate of the same gender, or if a friend is booking too, just let us know and we’ll pair you up!
The famous Acatenango overnight trek is definitely a challenge—it’s a 5–6 hour uphill grind—but the views of erupting lava at night make every single step worth it! You don’t need to be a marathon runner, just have a decent level of fitness and a good attitude. The best part of going with a group? You hike together, take plenty of breather breaks, and your leader handles the logistics (like getting you warm gear or hiring a porter if you don’t want to carry your heavy pack).
You’ll 100% need cash also known as Guatemalan Quetzales. Cards are fine for nicer spots in Antigua, but Central America’s coolest moments run on cash. Think night-market street food, hopping on tuk-tuks around Lake Atitlán, and picking up handmade gear.
Btw. ATMs in Guatemala can be moody and have daily limits (usually around $250 USD max), so pull out larger amounts less often to save on ATM fees. Always keep a couple of crisp USD bills stashed in your bag as an emergency backup!
