TRAVEL TO TAIWAN

Night markets, mountain peaks and unforgettable flavours
From bustling cities and ancient temples to dramatic coastlines, hot springs, and world-famous street food, Taiwan has more to uncover than you'd expect

Explore Taiwan's cities, culture and cuisine
Taiwan perfectly mixes modern city life with deep-rooted traditions. At the heart of the island is Taipei, a dynamic capital where futuristic skyscrapers stand alongside centuries-old temples and bustling night markets. Beyond the city, travellers can explore historic towns like Lukang, known for its beautifully preserved temples and traditional architecture, or discover local culture through Taiwan's famous street food scene. Whether you're sampling xiaolongbao, trying the infamous stinky tofu, or wandering through neon-lit food markets, Taiwan is a destination that appeals just as much to food lovers as it does to culture seekers.

National parks, mountains and natural wonders
Despite its relatively small size, Taiwan is packed with extraordinary natural landscapes. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike through the dramatic marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge, one of Asia's most spectacular canyon systems, or explore the misty forests and tea-growing hills of Alishan National Scenic Area. In southern Taiwan, Kenting National Park offers tropical beaches, coastal scenery, and excellent hiking opportunities, while Yu Shan (Jade Mountain), the highest peak in East Asia outside the Himalayas, attracts experienced trekkers from around the world. Add in natural hot springs, scenic coastal roads, waterfalls, and lush forests, and it's easy to see why Taiwan is considered one of Asia's best destinations for active travellers.

The best time to travel to Taiwan
Taiwan is a year-round destination, but the most popular times to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, temperatures are pleasant, rainfall is generally lower, and conditions are ideal for exploring cities, national parks, and hiking trails. Summers can be hot, humid, and occasionally affected by typhoons, particularly between July and September. Winter remains mild compared to many destinations, especially in southern Taiwan, making it a great option for travellers looking to escape colder climates. The best time to visit ultimately depends on your itinerary, but spring and autumn are often considered the ideal seasons for seeing the island at its best.

Taiwan packs an incredible variety of attractions into a relatively small island. Highlights include Taipei and its famous night markets, Taroko Gorge with its dramatic marble cliffs and hiking trails, Alishan with its mountain scenery and tea plantations, Sun Moon Lake, Kenting National Park, and the historic town of Lukang. Many visitors also seek out Taiwan's famous hot springs, coastal road trips, and traditional temples, making it a destination that combines nature, culture, and adventure exceptionally well.
For a first-time visit, we recommend spending 10–14 days in Taiwan. This allows enough time to explore Taipei, visit national parks, experience the east coast, enjoy local food culture, and discover smaller towns and natural attractions. If you're short on time, even a week can provide a great introduction to the island.
Absolutely. Taiwan is an excellent backpacking destination thanks to its efficient transport network, affordable accommodation options, diverse landscapes, and safe travel environment. Backpackers can easily combine city experiences, national parks, mountain hikes, beaches, cultural attractions, and food adventures within a single trip.
Taiwan is easy to combine with other destinations in East and Southeast Asia thanks to strong flight connections throughout the region, often for very reasonable prices! Many travellers combine Taiwan with Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, or the Philippines. Its compact size also makes it a great addition to a longer Asia itinerary.
Taiwan is considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Asia and was the first place in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. Major cities such as Taipei are known for their inclusive atmosphere, vibrant LGBTQ+ community, and annual Pride celebrations. While attitudes may be more traditional in some rural areas, LGBTQ+ travellers generally find Taiwan to be welcoming and progressive.
At KILROY, we believe travel should be inclusive for everyone and work with partners who share our commitment to respect, diversity, and creating positive experiences for all travellers.
