Road trip Australia along the East Coast

Hit the road from Sydney to Cairns for the ultimate east coast adventure
The A1 highway from Sydney to Cairns is the world's longest coastal road. It will take you up the beautiful Gold Coast, Fraser Island, Whitsundays and end in charming Cairns. These are just some of the stops on this epic road trip!
If you're into swimming and water sports, but want to take a ride at your own pace then you should jump onboard a campervan and take one or two months off exploring the east coast of Australia. You can take this road trip either from September to November or from February to April or May. From December to March it rains a lot in Cairns and unless you have a specific desire to hang under the canopy while the one flood replaces the next flood you should avoid this season.

Week 1: Sydney to Byron Bay
Start your East Coast adventure in Sydney, where you’ll have a few days to settle in and explore the city. Visit the famous beaches, take in the Harbour and Opera House, and get ready to hit the road. Then pick up your campervan and start heading north towards Port Stephens, known for its beautiful beaches, sand dunes and dolphins.
From there, continue to Coffs Harbour before making your way to Byron Bay, where your included 3-day Surf & Stay experience at Spot X awaits. Spend three days learning to surf, hanging out by the beach and getting into the laid-back Aussie surf lifestyle. With the ocean right on your doorstep, it’s a great place to catch your first waves, meet fellow travellers and enjoy some time away from the road.

Frequently asked questions
Planning a road trip from Sydney to Cairns? Here are some of the most common questions about this East Coast Australia itinerary, from how long you need to when to go and what’s included.
We recommend around 4–5 weeks for this itinerary. This gives you enough time to enjoy the major stops without spending your entire trip behind the wheel.
The route starts in Sydney and ends in Cairns. Along the way, you’ll visit places including Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Noosa, K’gari, Airlie Beach, the Whitsundays and Townsville.
Yes! If you prefer a little more comfort or would rather stay in hostels and hotels along the way, you can swap the campervan for a rental car. This gives you the freedom to follow the same East Coast route while having more flexibility when it comes to where you sleep each night. It can also be a good option if you’re travelling with friends and prefer having your own space rather than staying in a campervan. Just let your travel specialist know what you prefer, and they can help you find the option that works best for your trip and budget.
Definitely. This is a suggested route, so you can adjust the itinerary to suit your travel plans, budget and interests. A KILROY travel expert can help you build your own version of the trip.
The best time for this road trip is November to March. You’ll travel during the Australian summer, so you can make the most of the beaches, swimming and outdoor activities along the coast. Keep in mind that Cairns and Tropical North Queensland are hot and humid during these months, with more rainfall and tropical showers, especially from December to March.
Travel insurance isn't included in the itinerary, but it's strongly recommended. It's especially important when you're driving abroad and taking part in activities such as diving and water sports. KILROY can help you arrange travel insurance too.
