Frequently asked questions
Find here answers to all of your questions about this road trip in the USA.
Yes, a 5-week timeframe gives you a great balance of driving and exploring. Because your route spans from Oregon through Colorado, up to Wyoming, Montana, and Washington, you will cover a lot of ground. Planning for average driving legs of 3 to 6 hours between major hubs will ensure you have multiple full days to spend hiking and sightseeing in heavy-hitters like Yellowstone, Glacier, and Olympic National Parks without feeling completely rushed.
July and August are generally the prime months for this specific route. High-altitude mountain passes, such as Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Trail Ridge Road near Rocky Mountain National Park, and routes in Grand Teton and Yellowstone, are heavily impacted by snowpack and can remain closed well into June. Late summer offers the highest likelihood of fully open roads and accessible high-country hiking trails, though you should be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms and potential wildfire smoke.
Yes, several major parks on this route use timed-entry reservation systems or specialized vehicle permits during peak summer months to manage crowds. You will typically need advance vehicle registration for Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park (specifically for Going-to-the-Sun Road and the North Fork/Many Glacier areas), and vehicle entry or camping permits for popular coastal zones in Olympic National Park.
Both grizzly bears and black bears inhabit regions like Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and the Flathead area.
Always carry EPA-approved bear spray in an easily accessible place (not deep inside your backpack) and know how to use it.
Make plenty of noise on trails by talking loudly, and hike in groups.
Store all food, scented items, and trash securely in bear-resistant containers or hard-sided vehicles according to local park regulations.
A 5-week trip across these varied landscapes means experiencing everything from desert-like heat in parts of Utah/Colorado to freezing morning alpine temperatures. You should pack using the layering system: moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or insulating jacket, and a reliable waterproof/windproof outer shell. Even in July, morning temperatures in Yellowstone or the high Rockies can drop near or below freezing, while afternoons in Seattle or the Dalles can be hot and sunny.
