Road trip USA - Highway 1

Start your trip in beautiful San Francisco, where hippies and financiers live side by side. The city is full of contradictions, colorful personalities, culture, cool restaurants and cozy neighborhoods. Here you find a financial district, a hippie-town, China Town and Japan Town! Alcatraz is also worth a visit before jumping in the campervan and starting your road trip. Just remember to book your tickets well in advance, trust us - they do get sold out!

Get behind the wheel and hit California’s iconic Highway 1, taking you along some of the most beautiful stretches of the Pacific coast. Start in Santa Cruz, a famous surf town where you can catch some waves, explore the boardwalk and spot sea lions by the shore. Continue to Monterey Bay, where you can watch sea lions and otters around Fisherman’s Wharf or visit one of California’s nearby vineyards.

Next up is Big Sur, a must on any Highway 1 road trip. Drive through dramatic coastal scenery, stop at beautiful beaches and look out for sea lions and elephant seals. Don’t miss McWay Falls, where a waterfall drops onto the beach.

Further south, explore Hearst Castle in San Simeon and discover the area’s tide pools and sea life. Head to San Luis Obispo for a dune buggy adventure before relaxing in Morro Bay. Finish in Santa Barbara, known as the American Riviera. Go surfing or kayaking, try whale watching, explore the local arts scene or grab a beer at a local brewery. With surf, beaches, wildlife and epic coastal views, Highway 1 is made for a classic California road trip.

Last stop on this itinerary is Los Angeles. We've included 3 nights in our favorite hostel at Venice Beach, so you can either decide to drop of the camper and explore the surroundings by foot, bike or one of the electric scooters. It's a nice way to get around in the nearby neighborhoods, whereas if you'd like to cover bigger distances in the city for instance to check out some of the fashionable areas such as Beverly Hills and Hollywood, a car would be a better solution. Don't miss the view from Griffith Observatory, where you'll get a splendid view over the city. Whether you want to go home after LA or continue the trip onwards is up to you, we'll help you out either way.
