South Africa: South Africa generally experiences a dry and wet season. The dry season runs from May to October, characterized by low humidity, warm to hot temperatures ranging from 20-30°C, and an average of 8-10 hours of sunshine per day. The wet season runs from November to April, marked by higher humidity, hot temperatures ranging from 25-35°C, and an average of 6-8 hours of sunshine per day. Rainfall is common during this season, particularly in the afternoons, which may make some activities more challenging. However, the wet season also brings lush green vegetation and is a great time to view migratory birds and newborn wildlife. Nights spent in tents or basic accommodations can be quite cold. It is not uncommon for temperatures to drop to 5-10°C at night, and in some cases, even below freezing.

Thailand: Thailand has three main seasons: the hot season (March to May), the rainy season (June to October), and the cool season (November to February). During the hot season, temperatures can average around 30-35°C with high humidity, and sunshine hours of around 8-9 hours per day. The rainy season brings cooler temperatures averaging around 25-30°C and can have around 6-7 hours of sunshine per day. The rain can make the landscape in Thailand look more vibrant and lusher, making it a beautiful time to explore the country´s natural beauty. The cool season is the most pleasant with lower humidity, temperatures around 20-30°C, and around 8-9 hours of sunshine per day. It´s important to note that temperatures can vary depending on the region of Thailand you´re visiting, and that temperature as low as 5-10°C in the night is not uncommon in Thailand’s Northwest.

Philippines: The Philippines enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April), the hot dry season (March to May), and the rainy season (June to October). During the dry season, temperatures range from 24-31°C with relatively low humidity and abundant sunshine, averaging around 8 hours of sunshine per day. This season sees minimal rainfall, typically averaging around 30 mm per month. The dry season is an ideal time for visitors, offering perfect conditions for exploring the Philippines´ beautiful beaches and vibrant cities. The hot dry season, known locally as summer, sees temperatures rise to 29-36°C, with intense heat and higher humidity. Despite the heat, this period is popular among tourists and locals alike for outdoor activities and festivals. During the rainy season, temperatures range from 25-30°C, with significantly higher humidity and frequent rain showers, averaging around 5 hours of sunshine per day. While the Philippines´ rainy season brings increased rainfall, it also enhances the country´s lush landscapes, offering stunning views of verdant rice terraces, dense forests, and powerful waterfalls. The rain provides a refreshing break from the heat and contributes to the rich biodiversity of the islands. Additionally, the rainy season often means fewer tourists, allowing for a more serene and intimate experience. Rain showers are generally brief, often occurring in the late afternoon or evening, leaving ample time during the day to explore the numerous attractions the Philippines has to offer.

Tokyo: Japan´s bustling capital, experiences a varied and distinctive climate that shapes its vibrant urban life. Characterized by its humid subtropical climate, Tokyo enjoys hot, humid summers with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F) and mild, cool winters with occasional snowfall. The city witnesses a significant rainy season, known as "tsuyu," typically from June to July, bringing frequent showers and high humidity. Autumn and spring are particularly delightful, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies, making these seasons popular times for tourists and locals alike to explore Tokyo´s rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty. Whether it´s the dazzling cherry blossoms in spring or the stunning autumn foliage, Tokyo´s weather adds a dynamic charm to its metropolitan allure.

Hawaii: Honolulu, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, has a tropical climate with consistent temperatures throughout the year. The island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (May to October) and the rainy season (November to April). During the dry season, temperatures range from 26-31°C with low humidity and plenty of sunshine, averaging around 8-9 hours of sunshine per day. Rainfall is infrequent, with an average of around 50-60 mm per month. During the rainy season, temperatures are slightly cooler at 24-28°C, with high humidity and more frequent rain showers, averaging around 6-7 hours of sunshine per day. Rainfall is higher, with an average of around 100-200 mm per month. Despite the occasional rain showers during the rainy season, the island remains lush and green, providing visitors with picturesque landscapes to explore.

Los Angeles: Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. During the winter season (December to February), temperatures average around 18-21°C with occasional rain showers, averaging around 5-6 hours of sunshine per day. A big part of travelling is staying in unique accommodation styles. On your tour you will experience mixed dorms at hostels, shared basic hotels and lodges, one homestay and overnights in tents. For nights you have in a hostel it will be shared dorms with mixed gender(4-12 beds per room depending on the hostel).

For accommodation in hotels, lodges or similar the rooming will either be a twin, triple or quad room. You will always be roomed with the same gender, but the number of beds in the room can vary between 1-4. Friends travelling together are not guaranteed to share a room.

Your adventure includes a mix of transportation types throughout the itinerary. This allows you to experience a variety of ways of getting around! On this departure, you can expect transportation in the form of private minivans, public buses, tuk-tuks, public pick-up trucks, boats, public ferries and domestic flights.

The distances you will cover when driving in Africa are huge, and the road conditions vary from excellent to poor, with the surface being asphalt, concrete, sand or dirt. Many roads are not maintained regularly, so driving can be both slow and bumpy., making the vehicle and everything inside it rattle. It is all part of the experience when traveling in these parts of Southern Africa, but you should still be mentally prepared.

All Tripmates departures feature a dedicated local guide or tour leader, ensuring a hassle-free adventure, especially during the initial stages of your trip. Our guides are there to assist with logistics, such as navigating your way around and checking into accommodations. Additionally, they provide invaluable insights about the destinations you´ll be visiting and offer recommendations for exploring activities and sights. With the expertise of local guides, you´ll experience an immersive environment, delving into the history, culture, and social aspects of your chosen destinations.

GUIDED DAYS: You will have both "guided" and "unguided" days during your trip. Guided days indicate when your guide will be physically present with your group. Even during these guided portions of your itinerary, there may be free days where you have the flexibility to explore on your own. However, don´t hesitate to seek assistance from your guide during these free periods.

UNGUIDED DAYS: There will be moments in your itinerary where we set you free to explore without a guide. By now, we bet your group has gained new travel skills, so these days are all about giving you and the rest of your travel crew the freedom to do whatever you see fit. Don´t worry, though. We´ve got your back with essential arrangements like accommodation. During unguided days there will be no tour guide with your group, so it’s up to you to take the lead!

Pocket money is super personal, but for this trip, we estimate you’ll need between 3000-5000 EUR to cover costs not included in the trip price. However, if you want to go all out -like going diving, buying expensive drinks, and shopping- you’ll definitely need to budget for that!

Tipping is very appreciated, but not compulsory. It is common to tip service providers such as waiters around 10% of the bill. If you feel that your local guide did a great job, we suggest tipping around 2-5 USD per day per participant.

On some departures you might be joined by a local driver and/or assistants. In those cases, we recommend 1-2 USD per day per participant.

You should always talk to your local vaccination clinic or GP for health recommendations for your trip. Book an appointment and they will help you with exactly what you need for travelling to these various countries.

You will travel in a group of 4-12 other backpackers. Most people travel solo, so you will get to know each other quickly and share a really cool adventure together.

Before each departure, we create a private Facebook group for all your new travel buddies so that you have the opportunity to get to know each other before you leave. Here you can also ask questions about the trip to our Tripmates team.

Absolutely! If you and a friend are keen on doing something together without blowing your entire budget on just partying and tourist traps, Tripmates could be just the thing for you. You can book your spots together online, or separately. It’s totally up to you!

Do you want to travel with Tripmates as part of a longer trip? No problem!

For example, you can extend the trip and/or add more destinations plus exciting experiences such as volunteering, a road trip with a campervan, surf camp, diving or take a language course. Most things are possible! We can help you design your trip just the way you want it where Tripmates is part of the adventure. Just reach out to learn more!

We’ve crunched the numbers for this itinerary:

The average carbon footprint per person for this Tripmates adventure is 5,001 CO₂e

Every Tripmates tour includes a carbon footprint calculation — giving you a clear idea of how many kilograms of CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent) are emitted per traveller. This number reflects emissions from our internal operations as well as trip-specific inclusions like accommodation, transport (including flights that are built into the itinerary if applicable), activities, meals, and guides - everything built into your trip on the ground.

What about flights to and from the trip?

Our estimate above doesn’t include the emissions from flights to and from the starting and ending points of your adventure. That’s because these journeys can vary significantly — some travellers may already be in the region, while others might be incorporating the trip into a longer itinerary. Travellers also depart from many different airports across Europe, which makes it impossible to apply one single number for everyone.

To help you make informed choices, we provide a flight estimate where possible. For this itinerary, a round-trip flight from London adds approximately 2,637 kg CO₂e per traveller.

Putting it into perspective

We get it. It can be hard to picture what kilos of CO2 equate to, so we have some comparisons.

  • Driving a petrol car from Copenhagen to Paris 1,228 km = ~209 kg CO₂e

  • An economy flight from Oslo to Los Angeles (and back) = ~ 2,538 kg CO₂e

  • 100 cheeseburgers = ~320kg CO₂e

A Tripmates trip becomes guaranteed once 4 travellers join the same date. This guarantees a group with diverse backgrounds, giving you the chance to meet new friends from across Europe.

If your chosen departure doesn’t reach at least 4 travellers, don’t worry — we’ll contact you and help you switch to another suitable date. If it doesn´t work out with choosing a new date, no hard feelings, we´ll return your deposit.ill be no tour guide with your group, so it’s up to you to take the lead!
