There are multiple ways to explore Ha Long Bay, by kayak (from a boat), 1-day cruises or - in our opinion the best way - a multi-day cruise where you get to experience the bay both at night and in the early morning.
You will also have plenty of opportunities to swim in Ha Long Bay - either from a boat or at one of the pristine beaches. Other activities include snorkeling, visiting some of the iconic caves like Sung Sot, Luon or Dau Go Cave or simply taking in the spectacular views of the many limestone peaks.
If you are looking for something similar, but at a more budget-friendly price we recommend visiting the lesser known Bai Tu Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay. In La Ha Bay we highly suggest visiting Cat Ba Island where you can explore rugged nature by foot or bike and enjoy some delicious seafood at a backpacker-friendly price.

How to get to Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is about 170 km from Hanoi, and since the highway was built in 2018 - connecting Ha Long City with Hanoi - its incredibly easy to get there by bus, car or minivan. In addition, the Van Don International Airport has also opened about 50 km from Ha Long Bay, which offers flights to Ho Chi Minh City.
