Frequently asked questions
KILROY offers a range of volunteer opportunities across Central America. You can help care for rescued wildlife at animal rescue centres, support sea turtle conservation projects on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, or combine volunteering with activities like learning Spanish and surfing.
No. Most projects are designed for first-time volunteers, and you'll receive an introduction and guidance from experienced local coordinators. Enthusiasm, flexibility and a willingness to help are much more important than previous experience.
KILROY offers volunteer projects in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala, each providing a unique way to experience the region while giving something back. Most of our volunteer opportunities are located in Costa Rica, where you can join wildlife rescue centres, sea turtle conservation projects, or combine volunteering with Spanish lessons and surfing. If you're looking to explore more of Central America, you can also include Nicaragua or Guatemala in your itinerary before or after your project.
It's a question we get a lot. While you'll be giving your time and energy to a meaningful project, your programme fee helps cover the costs of running the project and supporting you during your stay. Depending on the project, your contribution typically includes:
Accommodation
Meals (where applicable)
Transport to and from the project
Local orientation and support
A direct contribution to the volunteer project itself
Your fee helps ensure the project can continue making a positive impact on the local community, wildlife or environment.
The length of your volunteer project depends on the programme you choose. KILROY offers projects ranging from one week to around 30 weeks. Most projects require a minimum stay, after which you can often extend your time if you'd like.
Minimum stays are especially important for community projects, where building trust and relationships takes time. Staying for longer helps create a more meaningful experience for both you and the people or organisations you're supporting.
While it may seem easy to arrange volunteering after you arrive, it can be difficult to know whether a project is ethical and genuinely benefits the local community. Some organisations prioritise profit over impact or have little long-term value for the people, animals or environments they're meant to support.
By volunteering through KILROY, you can be confident that you're joining carefully selected projects that focus on responsible and sustainable volunteering. You'll also have support before, during and after your programme if you need it.
We believe volunteering should create a positive impact, for both you and the local community. That's why we carefully screen every programme before offering it to our travellers. We look at how the project is run, whether it has long-term goals, how local communities are involved and how volunteers contribute in a meaningful way.
Our volunteer programmes are personally reviewed by our volunteering specialist, who works closely with our local partners to ensure they meet our standards for responsible and ethical volunteering. This means you can travel knowing your time and contribution are making a real difference.
Every project is slightly different, but accommodation is always included. Depending on the programme, you'll stay in a volunteer house, hostel or with a local host family. Some projects also offer the option to book a private room for an additional fee.
Many programmes include meals, while others provide breakfast only or access to shared kitchen facilities. Transport to and from your volunteer placement is arranged, and in many cases airport transfers are included as well.
