Top things to do in Guatemala
Guatemala rewards curious travellers willing to venture beyond the obvious. While famous landmarks certainly deserve a place on your itinerary, some of the country's best experiences happen in its smaller villages, mountain trails and lakeside communities.
Antigua
Antigua is a beautiful colonial city surrounded by volcanoes. Spend your days exploring colourful streets, relaxing in charming cafés and discovering centuries-old churches before heading into the mountains for an unforgettable trek.
Acatenango
If you're looking for one of Central America's greatest adventures, hike Acatenango. The overnight climb is challenging, but reaching camp above the clouds and watching nearby Volcán de Fuego erupt beneath the stars is an experience you'll never forget.
Tikal National Park

Best time to visit Guatemala
Guatemala is a year-round destination, but the dry season from November to April is generally considered the best time to visit. Expect warm, sunny days that are ideal for volcano hikes, exploring Antigua and discovering ancient Maya sites like Tikal.
The rainy season, from May to October, usually brings afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. In return, you'll find greener landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent conditions for enjoying Guatemala's natural beauty. If you don't mind occasional rainfall, this can be a fantastic time to experience the country away from the crowds.

Avoid walking alone after dark, be mindful when using your phone in busy places, and consider hiking with a local guide, especially on more remote trails. While the scenery is spectacular, some hiking routes have experienced robberies in the past, and going with a guide is generally considered the safest and most enjoyable option.
