Highlights & activities

Chiang Mai is famous for its stunning temples. A popular day trip takes you to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located on a hilltop about 16 km from the city. After climbing 290 steps flanked by impressive dragon handrails, you are rewarded with a fantastic view of Chiang Mai. The journey there features scenic mountain roads and refreshing streams. If time permits, you can also travel further to visit the famous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet.

For an ethical wildlife experience, the Elephant Nature Park is a must-visit. Established in 1996, this sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates elephants previously exploited in tourism. Here, the animals roam freely, and visitors can even apply for week-long volunteer programs to help care for them.

While some tours offer visits to local Longneck Villages, many travelers and specialists advise against it. The tradition of women wearing heavy neck rings is largely kept alive for tourism, often resulting in an exploitative experience that many visitors find uncomfortable.

More adventure & culture

Chiang Mai offers plenty of adventure and culture. You can take an authentic Thai cooking class, go bamboo rafting, or embark on a jungle trekking tour. These treks often include an overnight stay in a traditional indigenous village. If you go, remember to pack a warm sweater, as temperatures drop significantly at night—though the clear, starry night skies make it completely worth it!
