ROAD TRIP USA: SOUTHERN STATES

Music, history and delicious food - get ready for an epic road trip in the South
Amazing music, tasty soul food, rich history, cowboys and Elvis – the Southern States are unlike anywhere else in the USA. With their unique mix of culture, characters and stories, they’re easily one of the country’s kookiest corners.
Ever dreamt of meeting a real cowboy? You just might on a road trip through Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina. Along the way, you’ll discover a region where music is woven into everyday life. From the legendary sounds of Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton and Otis Redding to modern-day stars like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, the South has produced some of the biggest names in music.
But there’s much more to the region than music. As you travel from state to state, you’ll come across countless reminders of the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, giving you a glimpse into some of the most defining – and difficult – chapters of US history.
And then there’s the food. Expect hearty Southern classics like gumbo, jambalaya, pan-fried chicken, cornbread, boiled crawfish, sweet tea and peach cobbler. In fact, there’s so much to try that your biggest challenge might be deciding what to order next.
To top it all off, you can choose how you want to experience it. Rent the FCAR model for a classic road trip, or switch it for a campervan and take the freedom of the open road to the next level. The choice is yours.

Day 1-2: Kickstart your adventure in Atlanta
Pick up your car in the vibrant and fast-growing city of Atlanta, Georgia. But before you hit the road, take some time to explore the city.
Atlanta has a buzzing music scene and is one of the birthplaces of modern hip hop and R&B, with plenty of big names like OutKast, Ludacris and Usher having roots here.
The food scene in Atlanta is just as exciting, and the city is particularly famous for its chilli dogs. Make sure to grab one while you're exploring the city, it’s a proper taste of Atlanta.
If you’re after a bit more action, head just outside the city to Six Flags Over Georgia, home to some seriously big roller coasters and plenty of thrills. And if you're into sports, you can also catch a game while you're in town.
As you explore Atlanta, don't be surprised if you keep coming across streets called Peachtree. There are no fewer than 71 streets with Peachtree in their name, making it one of the city's most recognisable quirks.
How long you spend in Atlanta before hitting the road is completely up to you. Stay for a few days, soak up the city’s atmosphere, or get behind the wheel and start your Southern adventure.

Frequently asked questions
For this specific itinerary, we recommend spending three weeks. That gives you enough time to visit all the towns along the route without having to rush. Of course, you can stay longer if you’d like more time to explore each destination or add extra stops, either along the route or further afield. If you’re short on time, we can also help you design a route that fits your schedule.
Yes, we’d be happy to. This itinerary includes two nights of accommodation in New Orleans, but we can also help you arrange the rest of your accommodation. Whether you want to book everything in advance or keep parts of your itinerary open, we’ll sort you out.
Absolutely, but not in the rental car. Taking the rental car into Mexico is prohibited. However, if you’d like to combine your USA road trip with a trip to Mexico, we’d be happy to help you plan that too.
Generally, the USA isn’t considered a cheap destination, but there are, of course, ways to make your trip more affordable.
For example, we recommend fuelling up outside the bigger cities, as this can save you a fair amount of money in the long run. You can also be smart when it comes to parking. Parking in larger cities can be quite expensive, so look for accommodation with parking or consider leaving your car outside the city and using public transport for the rest of the journey.
When it comes to accommodation, it can be a good idea to book at least some of it in advance, so you don’t risk paying more by booking last minute. You could also swap your rental car for a campervan and combine your accommodation and transport in one. Whether you prefer a traditional accommodation or a campervan, we can help you with both.
A last note is that one of the great things about a road trip is that the journey itself is a big part of the adventure, so you don’t necessarily need to spend a lot of money on activities.
If you’re unsure whether your budget is enough for this trip, feel free to get in touch. We’ll be happy to tailor a trip that suits both your budget and your wishes.
We recommend going between November and June in order to avoid the worst summer heat and the hurricane season in the fall.
