Day 1-4: Kuala Lumpur: Culture and cuisine in the capital of Malaysia
Start your itinerary in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Check out the very impressive limestone hills that house the Batu Caves. As the giant golden Murugan statue outside of the caves suggests, some of the caves have temples or shrines inside of them. There are more temples in the city centre that are very insta-friendly, if you don't want to travel too much. In Kuala Lumpur the food scene is incredible if you manage to find the right places. Close by the Twin Towers try out the restaurant Limapulo, recommended in the Michelin guide but extremely cheap. Malay food includes various forms of Satay (definitely try some different ones) and the popular Nasi Lemak consisting or steamed rice with various sides like chicken, sambal and fried egg.

Frequently asked questions

This trip requires a little bit of tropical jungle gear and beach attire! Sumatran treks (like spotting orangutans in Bukit Lawang) require quick-dry long sleeves, sturdy tread shoes, and leech socks to deal with heavy humidity and mud. Conversely, the Philippines demands reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags for island-hopping banka boats, and water shoes for coral shores.
Singapore is almost entirely cashless (contactless credit cards or Apple/Google Pay work). Sumatra is predominantly a cash economy, where ATMs in remote areas frequently run dry or go offline, so withdraw local Rupiah (IDR) in major cities like Medan before heading into rainforests. The Philippines uses cash for tricycles and island tours, but digital wallets like GCash are widely accepted by smaller vendors.
We only work with highly reputable suppliers in Sumatra. Our partners strictly enforce national park regulations. Ethical trekking in Sumatra requires maintaining a minimum distance of 7 to 10 meters, keeping groups small (max 6 people), and never touching or feeding the animals.
Yes! But treat Singapore as a 48-to-72-hour launchpad or layover. It is the perfect 2–3 day stop to recharge, eat incredible food, and see futuristic architecture before or after exploring the rest of Southeast Asia.
