Van life & cultural road trip in Japan

Hit the road in Japan: culture, food & adventure
A really cool (and less ordinary) way to explore Japan is by doing a road trip. Making your own way through Japan will help you incapsulate the country's diverse culture, amazing food scene and natural beauty. By doing a road trip you get to see it all, when you want and in whatever pace you'd like. Buckle up, it's time for an epic road trip!
You arrive in Tokyo, Japan's bustling capital, where you'll start your trip with 3 days without your vehicle. Just enjoy Tokyo and everything this mega-city has to offer before you start the engine and drive.
Your road trip takes you from Tokyo and northwards to Nagano, the host of the Winter Olympics in 1998, before continuing west to Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. From here you head on to Nagoya and Hakone before ending your road trip back in Tokyo. You can see the full itinerary suggestion further below, but remember that it's entirely up to you how you want you road trip to be structured. Let us know if you have any specific plans you'd like to pursue.

Day 1-3: City break before the road trip
We've arranged the first 3 nights for you in Tokyo (you can stay longer if you'd like). After a long flight, it's nice to start out with a few days to explore this massive metropole before your road trip starts. In Tokyo, there is so much to see and do it's literally overwhelming. Each neighborhood is quite different, but we suggest you to at least go and see the Tsukiji Fish Market and the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s oldest and most famous temples. For a bit of piece and quiet (if you stay away from the main trails that is), we suggest the Meiji Shrine in Shibuya, a serene and peaceful shrine surrounded by a lush forest. After 3 days (or more?), you'll pick up your vehicle in the airport and hit the road.

Frequently asked questions
Planning a road trip through Japan comes with a few practical questions. Here are some of the most common questions to help you plan your trip.
Absolutely! The route in this itinerary is a suggestion, not a fixed plan. We have different road trip routes available, so you can choose the one that fits your travel plans and interests. Want to see more nature, spend longer in the cities or explore a different part of Japan? Talk to our travel experts and we’ll help you put together your route.
We recommend around two-three weeks for this itinerary. You’ll have three nights in Tokyo before picking up your campervan, followed by 14 days on the road. This gives you enough time to explore the main stops without spending your entire trip behind the wheel.
Definitely. A campervan gives you the freedom to explore Japan at your own pace and get beyond the big cities. You can stop at smaller towns, natural sights and places that are harder to reach by public transport. Just remember that Japan is a great country to explore slowly, so don’t try to fit too much into every day.
You can travel by campervan in Japan throughout the year, but the best time depends on where you want to go. Spring and autumn are particularly good for a road trip, while winter can bring snow and challenging driving conditions in some areas. If you’re heading into the mountains, make sure you plan around the season.
Driving in Japan is generally straightforward, but there are a few things to get used to. You drive on the left-hand side of the road, and some roads in cities and mountain areas can be narrow. Your travel specialist can give you more information about the driving requirements and what to expect before you set off.
You need the correct driving documents to rent and drive a campervan in Japan. The exact requirements depend on your nationality and licence, so check with your KILROY travel specialist before booking to make sure you have everything you need.
Yes! You don’t have to choose between a road trip and Japan’s famous rail network. We can help you combine your campervan adventure with rail travel, including Japan Rail Passes, so you can use the train for parts of your trip and a campervan for others.
Japan has dedicated roadside rest areas, campsites and other places where you can stop with a vehicle. Overnight parking rules can vary, so always check whether staying overnight is allowed at your chosen spot. Your travel specialist can also help you understand the options available along your route.
No, the campervan must be picked up and returned in Tokyo. But that doesn’t mean your travels have to end there! If you want to continue exploring Japan or travel onwards after your road trip, we can help arrange your onward travel from Tokyo, whether you want to continue by train, plane or another option.
