Furthermore, wildlife naturally congregates around remaining waterholes and rivers, leading to predictable and spectacular sightings.
Yes, when you follow your guide’s instructions. Vehicles are kept at a respectful distance, and large predators generally see a safari vehicle as a single, non-threatening object rather than a collection of prey. On walking safaris, you are always accompanied by highly trained, armed rangers who understand animal behavior and tracking safety.
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors (khaki, green, and beige) to blend into the environment and avoid attracting bugs. Because safari itineraries often involve small bush planes, luggage is strictly limited to 15–20 kg per person, and it must be packed in a soft-sided duffel bag rather than hard-shell suitcases.
Yes, most safari destinations require or highly recommend specific precautions. Routine vaccines should be up-to-date, and malaria prophylactics (preventative medication) are standard for popular regions like the Serengeti or Kruger National Park. Some countries also require proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination for entry. Check with your doctor or local vaccination clinic to make sure you're up to date with the vaccines you need before traveling.
You have two choices for how to arrange your safari in Kruger Park. If you have the time and energy for proper planning beforehand, along with a dash of adventure, you can easily rent a car and take the trip on your own. Driving here from Johannesburg takes about 4 hours, so don't count on day trips! There are campsites with tents or cabins where you can stay overnight within the park itself, as well as plenty of accommodations right outside. Keep in mind that if you set out on safari without a guide, you might not spot the animals you want to see. Therefore, we strongly recommend booking a pre-arranged safari, as the guides on the various tours have extensive experience and communicate with each other throughout the day to find where the animals are. A professional tour leader will also tell you a lot about the animals themselves and their behavior.
The vehicles used are safe, and food and accommodation are included so you don't have to waste time organizing them. All you need to bring is yourself and a good camera! For beginners, we recommend Drifters' simple but excellent safari called the "5 Day Kruger Park." This is also a great fit for honeymooners, as a hotel (simple standard) is used for accommodation.
