Trekking in Thailand
Intro

Trade the beaches for Thailand's jungle

Trek through lush forests, rice fields and mountain villages in northern Thailand, where the adventure takes you far beyond the usual tourist route.

More than just a hike

A trek in Thailand isn't only about putting one foot in front of the other. The real experience comes from everything you discover along the way. Depending on the trek you choose, you might swim in a jungle creek, learn how to make a fire, try local food, visit a Buddhist temple or explore an enormous cave by bamboo raft.

The Hidden Jungle Trek in Mae Kampong is a great option if you're short on time. From Chiang Mai, you'll head into the mountains to look for wild gibbons before exploring Mae Kampong village and hiking a secluded 3-kilometre forest trail with a local guide.

Looking for something more immersive? The five-day Northern Thailand Hilltribes Trek takes you deeper into the countryside, with several days of trekking between Lahu and Karen villages and overnight stays in basic local huts. You'll also visit Tham Lod, a huge cave explored by bamboo raft.

Frequently asked questions

Planning a trekking adventure in Thailand? Here are some of the things you might want to know before swapping your flip-flops for hiking boots.

Most of the trekking opportunities we offer are in northern Thailand, around Chiang Mai. The region is surrounded by mountains, forests and rural villages, making it the perfect place to get out into nature and away from the busier tourist routes.

Not necessarily. Our trekking experiences vary in length and intensity, so there are options for different fitness levels. A little preparation and a reasonable level of fitness will make the experience more enjoyable, especially for multi-day treks.

Absolutely. Trekking works perfectly as part of a bigger Thailand adventure. You could spend a few days exploring Bangkok, head north to Chiang Mai for a jungle trek and then continue south for Thailand's famous islands and beaches. Your KILROY travel expert can help you fit the trek into your wider itinerary.

On the multi-day Northern Thailand Hilltribes Trek, yes. You'll spend nights in Lahu and Karen villages and learn more about local traditions, food, crafts and daily life. Accommodation includes three nights in basic multi-share huts and one night in a hotel.

Expect plenty of nature. Depending on your trek, you'll hike through bamboo and teak forests, farmland and jungle, with opportunities to spot wildlife, visit waterfalls and explore caves. On the Hidden Jungle Trek, you can also search for wild gibbons in the forest around Mae Kampong, although sightings aren't guaranteed.

Going with a local guide is a great way to explore the jungle safely and get more out of the experience. KILROY works with selected local and international partners and offers organised trekking experiences with experienced guides.
