Frequently asked questions
Planning a trip to Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil? Find answers to the most common questions from our travel experts.
In Buenos Aires, Iguazu (Argentine side) and La Paz, they speak Spanish. For Rio de Janeiro and the Iguazu (Brazilian side), the official language is Portuguese. While you can get by with English in major tourist areas, hotels, and airports, learning a few basic phrases in both Spanish and Portuguese (like greetings, numbers, and asking for help) will make your trip much smoother and is appreciated by locals. Your local guide will also help you with this if necessary.
You will be dealing with multiple currencies, so preparation is key:
Argentina (Buenos Aires & Iguazu): Uses the Argentine Peso (ARS). Digital payments with credit cards are widely accepted, but it is always smart to understand the current local financial landscape before you go.
Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Iguazu): Uses the Brazilian Real (BRL). Credit and contactless cards are accepted almost everywhere, even for small purchases like street snacks.
Bolivia (La Paz): Uses the Bolivian Boliviano (BOB). Having some physical cash (Bolivianos) is essential, as smaller shops, taxis, and markets often do not take cards.
Both sides offer completely different, breathtaking perspectives, so visiting both is recommended if you have the time!
The Argentine side takes a full day and lets you get up close and personal with the cascading water, including walking right over the roaring Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo).
The Brazilian side takes about half a day and offers stunning, panoramic, wide-angle views of the entire waterfall system.
You will need a versatile wardrobe because your climate will shift dramatically:
La Paz & the Atacama: Can be very chilly, especially at night and in the mornings. Bring layers, a warm jacket, fleece, hat, and gloves.
Rio de Janeiro & Iguazu: Generally warm, tropical, and humid. Pack light clothing, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes for the park trails, a good rain poncho (you will get soaked at Iguazu Falls!), and plenty of sunscreen and bug spray.
