One month of volunteering and adventure in Costa Rica

Adventure, culture & conservation in Costa Rica
Are you ready for one epic trip in beautiful Costa Rica? Of course you are! Spend a month experiencing everything this country has to offer: learn Spanish, do volunteering, try out surfing and admire the lush nature and exotic wildlife.
Costa Rica is the perfect combination of amazing nature and variety of activities, and on this adventure, you'll get to experience many of the country's highlights first-hand. Start your travels by spending 2 weeks learning Spanish (which will come in handy during your time in Costa Rica) as well as participating in volunteer projects with the aim of supporting the local community. Also included in this itinerary is a 4-day-visit to the jungles of Tortuguero national park where you can spot wild animals in their natural habitat. You'll get to meet other backpackers during your Spanish and volunteering sessions, but you will also have time to travel independently around the country, which means that there's no limit to the activities you can try out. How about testing your skills in surfing, yoga or ziplining - or how about trekking up a volcano?

Week 1-2: Learn Spanish, volunteer and surf
Your adventure starts in San José, where you'll be picked up from the airport so you don't need to hassle with taxis. You'll get transferred to your hostel in the city center, which will also be your base for the first night of the trip. Take the time to get to know San José at your own pace.
The next morning your transfer to Santa Teresa is waiting for you! Get ready for 2 weeks of Spanish lessons and volunteering in this little gem of a place on the Pacific coast. Learning Spanish will not only come in handy during your volunteering, but also when and if you travel elsewhere in Costa Rica and Central/South America. In addition to the Spanish lessons, you will participate in volunteer projects designed to conserve and respect local natural resources. Project work is varied and priorities are seasonal and weather dependent, but the work generally focuses around beach conservation, recycling and supporting the local community. During these weeks, you can also choose an extra activity to enjoy in your free time: surfing or yoga. Whether you want to catch some waves on the Pacific coast or slow things down with a yoga session, you can pick the activity that suits you best.
If you're also interested in volunteering with turtles, extend your stay in Santa Teresa to 3-4 weeks and you'll get the chance to participate in a turtle conservation project. You can also opt in for some surf or yoga lessons while in Santa Teresa.

You’ll combine Spanish lessons with volunteering projects that support the local community and help protect Costa Rica’s natural environment. Depending on the season and local needs, projects can include beach conservation, recycling and community work.
No! The Spanish lessons are suitable for different levels, so you can join whether you're a complete beginner or already know some Spanish. Learning the language will also make it easier to communicate with locals during the rest of your trip.
Your volunteer work focuses on supporting the local community and protecting natural resources. Projects can include beach conservation, recycling and other environmental initiatives. The exact activities can change depending on local priorities, the season and weather conditions.
No. The first part of your trip gives you the chance to meet other travellers during your Spanish and volunteering experience, while other parts are designed for you to travel independently. This gives you a nice mix of meeting people and having the freedom to explore Costa Rica at your own pace.
Would you rather travel through Costa Rica as part of a group? No problem! We can also set you up with a group trip, so you can explore Costa Rica together with other travellers.
Rincón de la Vieja is a great stop if you want to experience Costa Rica’s volcanic landscapes and nature. You’ll have time to explore independently, with options such as hiking and other outdoor activities. You can also stop at different beaches and surf spots while making your way north from Santa Teresa.
The suggested activities in Rincón de la Vieja are optional and are not included in the package price. This means you can choose how you want to spend your time there.
Yes. If you’re interested in spending more time volunteering, the Santa Teresa section can be extended. The itinerary also mentions the option to stay 3–4 weeks if you’d like to volunteer with turtles.
Costa Rica is a great destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do. December to April is the dry season and generally offers the best weather for exploring, hiking and enjoying the beaches. May to November is the green season, when you can expect more rain but also lush landscapes, fewer tourists and often lower prices. If you want to combine volunteering, Spanish lessons and outdoor adventures, both seasons can work well. Keep in mind that weather can vary between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.
