Central America at a glance

The Banana Republics

Costa Rica stands out as the easiest country to navigate and serves as the ultimate hotspot for adventure sports like surfing and rafting, as well as volunteering and wildlife watching. Panama on the other hand delivers a laid-back lifestyle defined by beach culture, surfing, and the iconic Panama Canal. Guatemala offers a deep dive into Indigenous culture, particularly around Antigua, and boasts the spectacular Tikal ruins alongside unique riverside jungle lodges. Honduras and Belize are world-class destinations for diving and snorkeling, while also offering ancient history and the chance to swim through the famous ATM caves. And Nicaragua and El Salvador are the hidden gems of the region, offering fewer crowds, incredible volcano hiking, great surf, and the lowest travel costs.

What to do in Central America?

Surfing, trekking or volunteer? Central America has it all.

Packs an unbelievable punch for its size

Because the region is so narrow, you can literally watch the sunrise over the Caribbean sea and surf the Pacific Ocean waves at sunset on the same day. So if you're looking for ancient history, raw adventure, or just a deeply vibrant culture - Central America has it all. 12% of the planet’s biodiversity, volcanic playgrounds, deep mayan history and indigenous culture, "pura vida" and pristine nature and let's not forget that it's incredibly easy (and affordable) to go island hoppping.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Absolutely! But use your street smarts. The backpacker scene here is massive, and most trips go down without a hitch. That said, petty theft like pickpocketing or phone-snatching is definitely a thing.

To keep yourself out of trouble, leave the flashy stuff at home. Waving a brand-new iPhone around a busy market just makes you an easy target. When it comes to getting around, skip the solo midnight beach walks and dark alleys. Use Uber where you can—it’s super common in places like Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador—instead of waving down random street taxis after dark. Oh, and the ultimate golden rule: stay away from illegal drugs. It hooks you up with the wrong crowd, puts you in sketchy situations, and trust me, local jail laws are brutal.

You don't need to be fluent, but a little goes a long way! Belize is actually English-speaking, and you'll find plenty of English at hostels and tour spots across the region. But learning a few basic phrases ("Por favor," "Gracias," "Buenos días") changes the whole vibe. It shows respect, and the locals will love you for trying. Pro tip: download the Spanish offline file on Google Translate and grab your Google Maps offline before you head out. It’s a total lifesaver for navigating and chatting when you have zero signal.

Nope, skip it. While you can technically get away with drinking tap water in the more built-up parts of Costa Rica and Panama, the water in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize will easily mess up your stomach and ruin a week of your trip. Watch out for ice cubes at small local spots too. Your best bet to save cash and skip the plastic waste is to pack a reusable bottle with a built-in filter, like a Grayl or LifeStraw. That way, you can safely clean up tap water wherever you end up.
